Where will your business be in 2 or 3 years?


I was recently having a conversation with an associate about the difficulty for owners of small businesses who are struggling with conflicting schedules and demands. After an initial period of energy and exuberance over their new business, their “first love” begins to fade as they realize it’s not as easy as they thought (remember Gerber’s classic book “The E-Myth?” – It should be required reading for all new business owners). And since many small businesses are launched on a shoestring budget, the idea of bringing on some help or support seems counter-intuitive.

As I reflected back on the six year history of my virtual staffing company, I realized that I’ve made (at least in my opinion) a PROFOUND observation when comparing businesses in the same industries:

– Small business owners who say they cannot afford to bring on some level of clerical/admin support, even virtual support which is more economical than hiring, tend not to progress. In other words, two years later they are still working alone in their business and are either at a flat rate of growth or they are out of business.

– On the other hand, business owners who do bring on support (whether on-site or virtual) do tend to progress. In just about every case, two years later, they are far beyond their competitors who have chosen to “go it alone.”

As much as I would like this to be about our virtual staffing services, it’s really not about Daybreak. This is all about the mindset of the business owner. The old adage that you need to “spend money to make money” is very true. Also true is that you need to envision where your business will be in 2, 3 or 5 years, and then make plans to get there. And if the best plan a person has for their business is that they will still be able to do it all without secretarial or admin support in two or three years, then that’s where they’ll be.
